Case Studies & My Toolbox

Bonnie Chan license massage therapist in Westminster, Colorado poses with Trail Guide to the Body.

Bonnie Chan-Amore LMT, BCTMB, MBA

I'm a former IT Project Manager who switched careers to pursue my passion in bodywork and movement.  I also have more than 20 years of experience in dance, yoga, Pilates, and martial arts. With my unique background, I take a holistic approach to massage therapy because I've experienced first hand the impact that sedentary work can have on the body.

I've treated over 100 workers compensation clients and countless other clients who have experienced major surgery and trauma.  There's no single treatment that works for everyone so my training in orthopedic assessments and osteopathic techniques sets me apart from other massage therapists and fitness instructors. I'm an anatomy nerd and fueled by curiosity.  I'll never stop learning and teaching clients how to understand and care for their physical bodies.

Click here to learn how I changed careers!

Case Study #1: Shoulder Flexion

The client pictured here (a real client!) was unable to lift his arms into shoulder flexion and abduction.  Client worked at a job that required constantly holding his arms straight out in front of him.  We assessed for possible structural issues with the joint using passive movement where I moved his arm without client's assistance.  Since I could lift his arm without resistance, I felt safe to continue with treatment.  After a single session, he was able to lift his arms much further.  We used deep tissue work to his pectoral muscles (chest) and biceps.  I found multiple trigger points and adhesions in pectoralis minor.  Over multiple sessions, the client's shoulder pain decreased and mobility increased.

Case Study #2: Avoiding a Second Knee Surgery

A client who had a knee replacement 2 years ago was told they might have the wrong size prosthetic and would need a second TKR (total knee replacement).  Six weeks before surgery, client started coming in for weekly massage work and made no other lifestyle changes.  We did quite a bit of trigger point work on his hamstrings but also gentle osteopathic techniques to calm the nervous system around the knee joint.  It required 2-3 sessions before the nervous system allowed me to work deeper and release scar tissue.

On surgery day, they went in for the second operation and their doctor said the client's range of motion increased by 10%.  The surgeon believed the massage therapy was the primary contributor. The scar tissue had started "realigning" and the knee was moving .  The doctor said they ethically cannot go through with the second operation to replace the knee and sent the client home.  This client is far from being pain free but now that they know surgery isn't the answer, they can focus on lifestyle changes!

Case Study #3: Chronic Sinus Headaches

A client discovered they had a chronic sinus infection for several years.  The infection had been treated and was cleared months earlier, but their sinus headaches persisted.  We used intraoral work for TMJD.  Wearing gloves, I gently worked the deep muscles of the client's jaw internally and externally. In additional, we applied cranial mobilization techniques used by osteopaths to self-align the deep structures of the cranium.  Client experienced deep relaxation during the treatment and at one point, they felt their sinuses clear and was able to take a deep breath through their nose.  Weeks later, they reported their headaches had stopped.  They had more energy and decided to tackle some major changes in their life!

Case Study #4: Biceps tendonitis & shoulder pain

Client presented with shoulder pain that had persisted for several weeks, especially during overhead movements. The affected shoulder appeared rolled forward and noticeably out of alignment compared to the other side. Despite previous treatment from physical therapy and chiropractic care, the client reported no lasting improvement in range of motion or pain.

Upon palpation, the biceps tendon did not feel well-set in its groove. While I cannot diagnose conditions such as biceps tendon subluxation, I suspected this was the case.  After talking through the risks and proposed treatment with the client, we agreed to proceed.  I gently worked to release tension in the biceps muscle and lengthen space near the biceps tendor. During this work, we both noticed a subtle clicking sensation, and the client’s shoulder position noticeably shifted, suggesting a release or realignment had occurred.

Client reported they felt absolutely no pain when lifting the arm overhead.  The effects lasted for several months until a similar incident occurred.  Ultimately, the client will likely need physical therapy to rebalance and strengthen the shoulder to prevent recurrences.

Massage Techniques & Modalities

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy

Tbars used for trigger point therapy

Trigger point therapy is a massage technique that focuses on relieving muscle pain and discomfort caused by trigger points. Trigger points are tight "knots" or bands of muscle fibers that can develop in muscles throughout the body. These points can be sensitive to pressure and may cause referred pain or discomfort in other areas of the body.

During trigger point therapy, a massage therapist applies targeted pressure to these trigger points to release tension and alleviate pain. The therapist may use various techniques, such as deep tissue massage, stretching, and sustained pressure, to effectively treat the trigger points.

Trigger point therapy aims to deactivate the trigger points, restore proper blood circulation, and promote relaxation and healing in the affected muscles. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing chronic pain, muscle tension, headaches, or restricted range of motion.

The benefits of trigger point therapy include pain relief, improved muscle function, increased flexibility, and reduced muscle spasms. It can also help to improve posture, enhance athletic performance, and accelerate injury recovery.

It's important to note that trigger point therapy may involve some discomfort or tenderness during the treatment, as the therapist works on releasing the tension in the trigger points. However, the overall goal is to provide relief and improve the functioning of the muscles.

If you're interested in trigger point therapy, it's recommended to consult with a qualified massage therapist who specializes in this technique. They can assess your specific needs and develop a personalized treatment plan to address your pain or discomfort effectively.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic technique that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. It involves applying firm pressure and slow strokes to target specific areas of tension and tightness in the body.

During a deep tissue massage, a massage therapist uses their hands, fingers, elbows, and sometimes even forearms to apply pressure and manipulate the muscles. The therapist may also incorporate techniques such as kneading, friction, and stretching to help release muscle tension and promote relaxation.

The primary goal of deep tissue massage is to break up adhesions, which are knots or bands of rigid tissue that can cause pain, limited mobility, and inflammation. By applying deep pressure and specific techniques, the therapist can help to break down these adhesions and restore proper blood circulation to the affected area.

Deep tissue massage is often sought after by individuals who experience chronic pain, muscle stiffness, or have sustained injuries. It can be particularly effective in addressing issues such as neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain, and sports-related injuries.

It's important to communicate with your massage therapist during a deep tissue massage session. Let them know if the pressure is too intense or if you experience any discomfort. It's normal to feel some soreness after a deep tissue massage, but this should subside within a day or two.

Overall, deep tissue massage can be a highly effective treatment for addressing chronic pain, promoting muscle recovery, and enhancing overall physical well-being.

Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage

Basalt hot stones

Hot stone massage is a therapeutic massage technique that involves the use of smooth, heated stones placed on specific areas of the body. The stones are typically made of basalt, a type of volcanic rock that retains heat well.

During a hot stone massage, the therapist will first heat the stones in water to a specific temperature. They will then place the stones on key points of the body, such as the back, hands, or feet. The therapist may also use the stones as an extension of their hands and incorporate them into the massage strokes.

The heat from the stones helps to relax the muscles, allowing the therapist to apply deeper pressure if desired. The warmth also promotes increased blood flow, which can aid in the release of muscle tension and the removal of toxins from the body.

It's important to communicate with your massage therapist during a hot stone massage. Let them know if the stones are too hot or if you experience any discomfort. The therapist will ensure that the stones are at a safe and comfortable temperature throughout the session.

Hot stone massage is generally safe for most people, but it may not be suitable for individuals with certain conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or certain skin conditions. It's always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider before receiving a hot stone massage, especially if you have any underlying health concerns.

Overall, hot stone massage can provide a soothing and deeply relaxing experience, helping to ease muscle tension, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being.

Cupping Therapy

Visceral Manipulation or Abdominal Massage

Cupping therapy is a technique that involves placing cups on the skin to create a vacuum-like suction. While cupping therapy can be performed as a standalone treatment, it can also be combined with massage therapy to enhance its benefits.

When cupping therapy is incorporated into a massage session, the therapist typically applies massage oil or lotion to the skin before placing the cups. The cups are then placed on specific areas of the body and either left in place for a few minutes or moved around to create a gliding sensation.

The suction created by the cups helps to draw blood flow to the area, promoting circulation and releasing tension in the muscles and tissues. It can also stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid, which can aid in removing toxins from the body.

Combining cupping therapy with massage can offer several potential benefits:

  1. Improved circulation: The suction created by the cups can enhance blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the muscles and tissues. This can help reduce muscle soreness, promote healing, and improve overall circulation.
  2. Muscle relaxation: Cupping therapy can help release tension and tightness in the muscles, allowing the massage therapist to work more effectively and providing a deeper sense of relaxation.
  3. Detoxification: The suction created by the cups can stimulate the lymphatic system, aiding in the removal of toxins and waste products from the body.
  4. Pain relief: Cupping therapy combined with massage can help alleviate muscle pain, reduce inflammation, and improve range of motion. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions such as chronic pain, sports injuries, or musculoskeletal issues.

It's important to communicate with your massage therapist during a cupping therapy session. Let them know if the suction feels uncomfortable or if you experience any pain. The therapist will ensure that the cups are applied safely and appropriately for your specific needs.

While cupping therapy is generally considered safe, it may not be suitable for everyone. It's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before receiving cupping therapy, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking specific medications.

Sports massage is highly beneficial for active individuals who engage in regular physical activities or sports. Here are some ways sports massage can help active people:

  1. Enhanced Performance: Sports massage can improve athletic performance by increasing flexibility, range of motion, and muscle function. It can help optimize muscle activation and coordination, leading to more efficient movement patterns and improved athletic performance.
  2. Injury Prevention: By addressing muscle imbalances, reducing tension, and promoting proper alignment, sports massage can help prevent injuries related to overuse or repetitive movements. Regular sports massage can identify and address potential problem areas before they develop into more significant issues.
  3. Faster Recovery: Sports massage helps to speed up the recovery process by promoting blood circulation and lymphatic drainage. This can help reduce muscle soreness, inflammation, and fatigue, allowing active individuals to recover faster between workouts or training sessions.
  4. Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion: Sports massage techniques such as stretching and joint mobilization can help improve flexibility and range of motion in muscles and joints. This can enhance overall athletic performance, prevent injuries, and promote better movement quality.

It's important to note that sports massage should be performed by a licensed and experienced massage therapist who understands the specific needs of active individuals. They can tailor the massage techniques to target areas that are commonly affected by your specific sport or activities. Communication between you and your massage therapist is crucial, as you can discuss your goals, any specific issues, and provide feedback during the session.

Sports massage can be incorporated into your training routine as a regular maintenance strategy or utilized during periods of increased training intensity. It's also important to complement sports massage with other aspects of a well-rounded training program, including proper warm-up and cool-down exercises, strength training, flexibility exercises, and adequate rest and recovery.

Remember to listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions or concerns before starting sports massage or any new form of therapy.

Abdominal massage is a gentle technique for soothing and simulating the abdominal area. Abdominal massage can offer several potential benefits:

  1. Improved digestion: By massaging the abdomen, it can help stimulate the digestive organs, such as the stomach, intestines, and liver. This can aid in relieving digestive discomfort, bloating, and constipation.
  2. Reduced tension and pain: Abdominal massage can help release tension and tightness in the muscles and tissues of the abdomen, which can be beneficial for individuals experiencing abdominal pain or muscle spasms.
  3. Increased blood circulation: The massage techniques used in abdominal massage can help improve blood flow to the abdominal area, promoting the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the organs and tissues.
  4. Relaxation and stress reduction: Like any form of massage, abdominal massage can induce a state of relaxation and help reduce stress and anxiety.

It's important to note that abdominal massage should be performed with care and caution. It is generally recommended to seek the guidance of a trained professional, such as a massage therapist or a healthcare provider, when receiving abdominal massage. They can ensure that the techniques used are appropriate and safe for your specific needs.

It's also important to be mindful of any underlying health conditions or recent abdominal surgeries that may affect the suitability of abdominal massage for you. Consulting with a healthcare provider is always a good idea before incorporating any new massage techniques into your routine.

Overall, abdominal massage can be a valuable therapeutic approach for improving digestion, reducing tension, and promoting relaxation. However, it's essential to approach it with care and seek guidance from professionals to ensure safety and effectiveness.
